Hydraulic Risk Mitigation for Florence

The project involves hydraulic risk mitigation interventions on the Arno River in the section between Nave a Rovezzano and Ponte Santa Trinita, aimed at safeguarding the city of Florence in the event of floods.

As is well known, Florence was severely affected by the flood of November 4, 1966, which left a lasting memory among the city’s inhabitants and beyond.

The final project was developed by the Tuscany Region with the aim of keeping the 200-year flood event within the riverbed under current conditions and ensuring a clearance of 50 cm in the future scenario, after the completion of the upstream flood retention basins of Florence.

The interventions span different areas, including UNESCO historic sites and smaller projects in peripheral areas, involving the construction of new reinforced concrete floodwalls, removable corten steel barriers, and earth embankment profiling.

Our firm participated—along with two companies and another firm from Florence—in an integrated tender for the execution of the works and was awarded the contract; specifically, we are responsible for the structural executive design and Safety Coordination during the Design phase.

As required by the Contracting Authority, the entire executive project was developed in BIM, utilizing modeling and structural calculation software with the same technology.
