Construction of New Industrial Sewer System

The project involves upgrading the sewer systems in the municipalities of Prato and Montemurlo, including the construction of a new separate industrial sewer system for intercepting hazardous substances from production discharges, aimed at depolluting the Bisenzio River and the Ombrone Pistoiese Stream.

The intervention covers the entire municipality of Prato and the industrial area of Montemurlo, extending to the Calice wastewater treatment plant.

Prato’s current sewer system is predominantly a combined system (stormwater, residential, and industrial) with overflow outlets that allow excess discharge into surface watercourses. The overflow of discharges from industrial activities, which are characterized by high pollutant levels, results in the release of hazardous loads, even during short rainy periods, that cannot be compared to the overflows of residential wastewater.

The approach adopted for the entire project was to separate stormwater from industrial water, which contains very high pollutant levels, and thus reduce the infiltration of unwanted water, which creates hydraulic overloads and operational difficulties at the treatment plant.

The firm assisted the contractor in preparing the improved technical offer; after being awarded the contract, the contractor extended the assignment, entrusting the firm with technical support for the execution of the works.
